FBI investigating death in Pawhuska Indian Village

The FBI is investigating the death of Jack “Rusty” Cheshewalla, who was found dead in his sister’s home Sept. 21 in the Pawhuska Indian Village.

“We have a death that’s being investigated,” said ON Police Chief Nick Williams. “We don’t know exactly what is going on. The FBI is here doing the investigation.”

The FBI investigates serious crimes on federal Indian land that include murder, child sexual and physical abuse, violent assaults, drug trafficking, gaming violations and public corruption matters, according to its website.

Cheshewalla, who is an Osage veteran and member of American Legion Post 198, has also been in local headlines for alleged child molestation. Cheshewalla was scheduled to go on trial Sept. 29 in Osage County court. According to The Bigheart Times, he had previously confessed to the molestation of 15-20 young girls but then recanted his statement and wanted a mental evaluation for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

The Osage News will update this story as more information is learned.

[Editor's note: This story was corrected on Sept. 22. Cheshewalla was going to trial for a recent victim just before his arrest, not a victim from the 1970s or 1980s. The Osage News regrets the error.]
