Osage JOM takes first place at Battle of the Plains

The youth competition featured other Indian Education programs from across the country

Forty-two Osage students were overjoyed on Jan. 26 when they were awarded the first place trophy at the 11th Annual Battle of the Plains Youth Competition.

“The students were ecstatic especially since a lot of the students have been coming every year,” said Avis Ballard, Osage Nation Johnson O’Malley (JOM) coordinator.

Tutoring opportunities available for Osage students

The Osage Nation Tutoring Program and the Sylvan Tutoring Assistance Program is being offered to Osage students through the ON Education department. The ON tutoring program is for Osage students living in Osage county and the Sylvan tutoring program is nationwide.

The Osage Nation Johnson O’Malley student dancers won second place at the Battle of the Plains Youth Powwow Jan. 15.

The powwow was held in Dewey and was sponsored by Operation Eagle of Bartlesville Public schools. Other dance groups that traveled to this youth powwow included: Poarch Creek from Alabama; Royal Valley from Kansas; Shawnee Schools and Owasso Schools.

November is a flurry of activity for the Native American students in Osage County. The Osage Nation Johnson O’Malley (JOM) parent committees of Skiatook, Hominy and Pawhuska hosted their cultural events in November to celebrate Native American Heritage month. These annual events are planned to promote cultural awareness and pride within the communities.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1, the second-strongest in state history, hit at 9:06 a.m. 8 miles southeast of Norman Oct. 13 and was felt in northern Texas, southern Kansas and most of Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoma Geological Survey.

Young Osages gain work experience this summer

















 The Osage Nation Summer Youth Program has given Osage youth like Robynn Rulo a chance to gain experience with the Osage Nation.

“I like making my own money,” said Rulo, a 17-year-old Pawhuska High School student who works for Osage Nation Constituent Services as a participant in this year’s Summer Youth Program.
