The Nation hopes to have the compact negotiated by June 17

The Osage Nation is banding together with 23 tribal nations in its hope to extend its tobacco compact with the state of Oklahoma till 2017.

At two intertribal meetings held in Stroud, Okla., the first on March 18 and the second on April 22, the tribes have produced a unified front as they negotiate with Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin.

ONES board considers Cogeneration project

A lengthy Bureau of Indian Affairs environmental review of the Nation’s Pershing property has changed a deal between Enbridge Inc. and the Osage Nation Energy Services, LLC.

Enbridge is still interested in the property, but instead of a pipe yard, which was originally planned, it will be used to store material and equipment, said Jill Jones, ONES LLC chairwoman.

Assistant Principal Chief BigHorse breaks tie with “yes” vote; Chief Red Eagle signs bill into law April 19

The Third Osage Nation Congress voted to appropriate $13 million toward building phase one of the new government campus master plan on April 18.

The bill (ONCA 13-13 sponsored by Congressman RJ Walker) authorizes the $13 million to come out of the Nation’s general treasury fund and places it into a revolving fund for construction of the long-discussed master plan to replace the current old and outdated campus infrastructure.

The Skiatook Casino is expected to be finished in early 2014

Osage Manhattan Builders reached a milestone at the Skiatook Osage Casino construction site and celebrated with an employee appreciation luncheon on March 19.

“We reached the milestone of no accidents since we started on the construction of the new Skiatook Casino six months ago and we have a crew of 60 men,” said Cliff Crawford, Osage Manhattan Builders senior superintendent.

The Osage Minerals Council is requesting the Negotiated Rulemaking Committee extend public input for six more months.

Councilman Curtis Bear said at a March 20 OMC meeting that he felt the negotiations were going through too fast, too fast for the tribe to realize what was happening and what the effects would be after their decisions.

The newly created Osage Nation Energy Services LLC board is letting it be known that Rod Hartness and Osage Minerals Councilman Myron Red Eagle are not welcome when it comes to making their business deals for the Nation.

The ONES board is alleging Hartness and Councilman Red Eagle are meddling in their business to the detriment of the Nation. And, they are alleging Osage Nation Principal Chief John Red Eagle is to blame.

By majority vote, the Third Osage Nation Congress selected former Congressional Speaker Jerri Jean Branstetter for its interim appointment to the board during the Tzi-Zho Session last fall. In December, Principal Chief John Red Eagle appointed Lu King for his branch’s selection for the three-member board.

Nestled in the quiet hills of Osage County is an Osage-owned Bed-and-Breakfast called Moonstone.

Johnny “Jack” Smith (Osage) and his wife, Penny, opened Moonstone Bed-and-Breakfast in May.

“We both really like animals and with all this land we have, we wanted to do something with it,” Smith said. “So one day we just decided to start a bed and breakfast.”

The 65-acre property is located west of Ochelata and has plenty of activities for all ages.

LLC plans to pursue government contracts using its 8(a)-certified subsidies

The Osage Limited Liability Company is receiving $2.6 million to fund its 2013 operations. The Third ON Congress approved an LLC capital contribution bill during the third special session.

LLC representatives told Congress the entity planned to use its 8(a)-certified entities to pursue government contracting opportunities in making its case for a capital contribution. This is the first capital contribution approved for the LLC operating with two first-time board members appointed and confirmed during the Tzi-Zho Session in September.
