There are candidates serving Osage food, but alas, no grape dumplings

As soon as you step out of your car on the Osage campus on Election Day there is a very distinct smell wafting through the air: Barbecue.

The candidates for the 2012 Osage General Election are cooking it up for Osage voters, some serving veggie and fruit trays, while others hauled in giant cookers to serve ribs, brisket, hot links and basically anything you can grill.

There are candidates serving Osage food, but alas, no grape dumplings.

I went around all the camps asking for their Election Day menu. Here is a quick run down:

Booths also set up around campus; Unknown when the initial results will be announced after polls close at 8 p.m.

Foot traffic at the Osage Congressional candidate campsites died down after the lunch hour, but steady streams of voters were still making their way to the polls after 1 p.m.

More than 15 people stood in the Congressional chambers lobby waiting for their ballots from Election Office staff and volunteers who manned the front door. Voters then took their ballots into the chambers, which had individual booth spots set up for voting.

Voters from Texas, Missouri and California made the trip back home to vote

Waymon Lain has always voted by absentee ballot but this year he decided to drive 340 miles from his home to make his mark.

Lain is from Joshua, Texas, which is about a six hour drive to Pawhuska.

“I think it is important to vote,” Lain said. “I like coming up here (Pawhuska) and this year I decided to drive up here to vote instead of by absentee [ballot].”

Lain voted around noon and was going to visit the Osage Tribal Museum before making his trip back to Texas.

Some candidates wait to vote after visiting with voting Osages

The 2012 Osage Nation General Election is history with the polls closing at 8 p.m. and the ballot counting underway.

Hundreds of Osages filed into the Congressional chambers throughout the day to cast ballots in the election determining which six Osages will sit on the Third Osage Nation Congress. Those who are elected will take oath of office next month.

As the dinnertime hours passed, some candidates said they had yet to vote at the polls but planned to do so before the doors were locked.

Kids were enjoying the snow cones, provided by candidate Hank Hainzinger, as evidenced by the many kids running around with purple lips

Election Day is winding down and I think everyone would agree that it is HOT outside.

The day had a high of 92 degrees with a humidity of 49 percent – which in Weather Channel terms, feels like 97 degrees.

Kids were enjoying the snow cones, provided by candidate Hank Hainzinger, as evidenced by the many kids running around with purple lips.

Pawhuska residents reflect on candidate signs, the Osage Congress and Osage business

Virginia Kelderman began noticing campaign signs around Pawhuska but had no idea who the candidates were or what they were running for.

“I see a lot of signs on the streets and neighborhoods and I wonder who is running for what,” she said.

Kelderman lives in Pawhuska, across the street from Osage candidate John Jech.

“I see his signs on his lawn, and it looks really exciting,” she said. “But I don’t know how many seats are on the Osage Congress or how it is set up.”

Osages in New Mexico, California and Oklahoma say they still haven’t received their absentee ballots

Osages in New Mexico, California, Oklahoma and Pawhuska say they haven’t received their absentee ballots yet. The absentee ballot request deadline was May 15.

The Election Board asked Osage voters to allow five to seven business days to receive absentee ballots because Maryland-based TrueBallot Inc., the election company who conducted the 2010 Osage Election, is mailing the ballots. The five to seven days have passed and now Election Day is only four days away.

Six candidates failed to turn in Campaign Reporting Statements by May 18 deadline

The Osage Nation Election Board issued more than 20 fines to candidates in the last month, with some candidates receiving two or more.

Most of the fines are due to a little known rule buried within the election board’s 19-page rules and regulations, which every candidate received upon registering.
