MIDWEST CITY, Okla. – The Osage News won six Oklahoma Press Association awards in the 2012 OPA Better Newspaper Contest including first place finishes for news writing and personal columns.

Celebration dance held Oct. 7

Osages and their families celebrated the tribe's pride with a dance on Oct. 7 in observance of the Osage Day holiday.

The Sunday evening celebration drew scores of Osages and dancers from other tribes who danced to several songs that night at the Osage County Fairgrounds.

The following people finished in the top three spots during the dance competition in their respective categories:

Women’s Cloth: First, Salina No Ear Todome (Ponca/Otoe); Second, Chalene Toehay (Kiowa /Osage); Third, Teranne SpottedBear (Osage)

Newspaper wins General Excellence in its respective category

The Osage News and its staff won a total of seven Media Awards from the Native American Journalists Association during this year’s annual conference in South Florida.

The newspaper’s Web site won first place for Best Online Newspaper in its respective division. This is the first year the Web site has won an award in this category since it was launched in 2009.

This year, the newspaper took first place for General Excellence in the monthly/ bi-monthly category for its 2010 election coverage.

The Osage Mineral’s Council passed a resolution Sept. 29 to give a donation in the amount of $50,000 to support a lawsuit that could abolish the Osage Constitution.

New Palace owner Rick Parker: ‘Everything will be staying the same.’

The Osage Nation LLC got rid of two Osage businesses Monday. Two businesses some Osages felt were meant to serve the community and just weren’t for profit.

The Osage Nation Gift Shop closed for good and the Palace of the Osage grocery store in Fairfax has been sold to Rick Parker, a Barnsdall grocer.

Governor Brad Henry sends letter to Department of Interior in support of Osage casinos

Principal Chief John Red Eagle confirmed Tuesday that the Nation will be appealing to the United States Supreme Court before Oct. 22 in it’s lawsuit against the Oklahoma state Tax Commission.

 The Osage Nation Summer Youth Program has given Osage youth like Robynn Rulo a chance to gain experience with the Osage Nation.

“I like making my own money,” said Rulo, a 17-year-old Pawhuska High School student who works for Osage Nation Constituent Services as a participant in this year’s Summer Youth Program.
