Speakers of Osage and other tribes with Dhegihan dialect meet, network
Ardina Moore says she and her fellow Quapaw people are pleased with the tribe’s Las Vegas Strip-style casino resort but there are more important things the people must consider: their tribe’s first language, for example.
“We are proud of this casino, but to me, our language and culture are more important,” Moore said during the Dhegiha Gathering language conference held at Downstream Casino Resort.
So . . . a Kaw, Quapaw, Osage, Omaha and Ponca walk into a conference together . . .
So . . . a Kaw, Quapaw, Osage, Omaha and Ponca walk into a conference together . . . sounds like the beginning of a crazy joke, right? The point is, all of those tribes mentioned above are all part of the Dhegiha Siouxan language group. Meaning: we all speak variations/dialect of the same language. Awesome blossom right? I think so too.

The Osage Language department is looking for talented artists to design artwork for the Dhegiha Gathering Aug. 2 – 3 at the Down Stream Casino Resort in Quapaw. The Osage Language department is hosting the Gathering. The Dhegiha language family consists of the Osage, Ponca, Quapaw, Omaha and Kaw tribes. The first Gathering is to bring everyone together to establish similarities. We encourage artists of the Dhegiha tribes to submit their artwork. Deadline for entries is April 30.
