Three Osages win top honors in 2012 Indian Taco Championship

Debra Lookout wins first place for a third consecutive year; Cooks, spectators brave cool October rain for taco entrees

Three Osages took top honors in this year’s National Indian Taco Championship held Oct. 6 in downtown Pawhuska with Debra Lookout winning first place for the third consecutive year.

The Indian taco championship event, now in its eighth year, was moved to the fall season for the first time this year. In prior years, the event was held in May. This was also the first year for a competition dance held during the event and the People’s Choice award with a $1,000 prize to the contestant receiving the highest votes.

Osage Language students honored at appreciation dinner

Osage News Students of the Osage language were honored Saturday with a dinner at Wakon Iron Hall. The dinner was hosted by the organization Friends of the Osage, which raises money throughout the year so that the Osage Language Department can have functions such as the dinner.

About 50 students attended and those with the best attendance at each of the five language teaching sites were honored with a medal and a certificate. The students feasted on catered food from Burn Co., who cooks all of their food over an open flame.
