Efforts are underway in Skiatook to bring a community health clinic to the town thanks to a federal grant and a $75,000 matching fund from the Osage Nation.

On Oct. 19, Principal Chief John Red Eagle presented the $75,000 matching fund check to the Focus Health Group overseeing the Skiatook Community Health Clinic project. The group is also a recipient of a $99,600 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to build the clinic in the former junior high school on South Osage Avenue.

Alcoholism, chemical dependency or drug addiction are all terms for the same illness. It has many different manifestations. What many see as voluntary actions by the affected individual are actually the result of a compulsion to use or drink that is embedded in a psycho-social context.

The behavior that is actually seen is the son that continues to drink despite mounting legal and financial consequences or the wife that shops doctors for her pain pills despite being seen to be sleepy and unsteady on her feet in the middle of the day with unremitting claims of pain.

A private grocery truck is setting up shop this morning (Oct. 24) at the vacant Palace of the Osage grocery store in Fairfax from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A private grocery truck is setting up shop this morning (Oct. 24) at the vacant Palace of the Osage grocery store in Fairfax from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The mobile store business owner and the Osage Nation made arrangements for hosting the truck one day this week with further visits to follow.

Raymond Lasley, executive advisor of programs for the Principal Chief's office, said Chief Red Eagle authorized use of the Palace property and electricity for the truck's use during its stay.

Substance abuse experts say consumption can be ‘rapidly addicting’; Osage Nation employees researching bath salt issue

The bizarre zombie-like attacks of people eating human flesh as well as dogs across the globe have left people wondering if a Zombie Apocalypse is underway or are these individuals simply insane.

Majority of the attacks all have to do with Bath Salts, a class of synthetic chemicals that are stimulants and similar to amphetamine. It can cause individuals to be aggressive, violent, agitated, wound up and can even cause hallucination.

Center closed until further notice; Congressional committee to review fitness center budgets Sept. 10

What appears to be black mold, missing ceiling panels and broken fitness equipment were just some of the problems at the Osage Nation Fitness Center in Pawhuska. It recently closed for renovations and will be closed until further notice.

“It had been like that for a long time,” said a source about the structural problems found within the center. The source asked not to be named for this article. “I didn’t work out for two years and it seems like it was in the same condition when I started working out again.”

ON Prevention Program looking for 25 Osage women drug and alcohol free who can commit to the program for at least one year

The Osage Nation Prevention Program is developing a mentoring program for Osage girls in Osage County called Strengthening Native Girls Program.

“We need some sort of resource to reduce teen pregnancy and underage drinking,” said Peaches Hail, ON Prevention Programs specialist.

The Strengthening Native Girls Program will be geared toward Osage girls ages 12-17 at high-risk of being exposed to alcohol and drug abuse.

Drive collects 34 bags of clothing and shoes as of April 20; more donations expected to come

The Osage Nation Boys and Girls Club are helping families and individuals in need by hosting an annual charity clothes drive.

“The reason we started doing the clothes drive is because we noticed the children in the club and their families needed clothes,” said Gina Blankinship, assistance area coordinator.

Walkeen Wahwassuck was found safe in Tulsa; details have yet to be released

The Osage Nation Police Department announced that Walkeen “Keenie” Wahwassuck has been found safe in Tulsa.

According to a prepared release, the ONPD said the public responded to requests for information, providing possible leads for the department and Wahwassuck was found safe. Details have yet to be released.

Wahwassuck’s family expressed their joy on Facebook and thanked the community for their efforts in finding her.

Walkeen "Keenie" Wahwassuck has been missing since March 14 and was last seen in Tulsa

The Osage Nation Police Department and the Tulsa Police Department have opened investigations into the disappearance of Walkeen “Keenie” Wahwassuck, a Pawhuska native who went missing March 14.

According to a flyer by Wahwussuck’s family, she was last seen about 1 p.m. March 14 near the Indian Health Resource Center at 550 S. Peoria Ave. in Tulsa.

She was driving a tan-gold, four door, 2005 Chevrolet Malibu with tinted windows, a front license plate that reads “Classic” and an Osage Nation tag of ON10674.

Julie O’keefe owns The Grayhorse Group, fills fifth vacant spot on board

Osage Nation Principal Chief John Red Eagle has appointed an Osage entrepreneur to the final vacant seat on the ON Foundation Board which is the nonprofit charity arm of the Nation.

Julie O’keefe will serve as interim Foundation Board member, a position subject to ON Congressional confirmation during the forthcoming 2012 Hun-Kah Session. She was sworn as a board member by Trial Court Judge Marvin Stepson on Feb. 16.
