Osage Buck player named Tulsa World’s ‘Athlete of the Week’; Three area high school football games scheduled Oct. 5

The Hominy Bucks lost their fourth game of the season against the Morrison Wildcats, 38-6 on Sept. 28.

“This season has been tough but the final scores have been close so it’s really not anything we should be down about,” said Anthony Kemble, Osage, Hominy football player.

 During the first quarter each team held their ground, 0-0.  But three seconds into the second quarter, the Wildcats scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion, 8-0.

Huskies win their first game of the season against Hominy; Woodland also wins its Sept. 14 game against Copan

The Pawhuska Huskies took home bragging rights in this year’s Battle of the Osage amid the threat of rain.  

Pawhuska and Hominy football fans arrived at Hominy High’s football stadium with umbrellas, rain jackets and even a canopy to support their teams at the annual rivalry game on Sept. 14.

The Huskies and Bucks held their ground during the first quarter, 0-0.

In the second quarter, the Bucks tackled the Huskies in the end zone for a safety and the lead, 2-0.

Hominy and Woodland also lose their Sept. 7 games

The Pawhuska Huskies lost their first home football game against the Dewey Bulldoggers, 53-13 on Sept. 7.

The Huskies scored a 95-yard touchdown in the first quarter but it was no match for the Bulldoggers who scored two touchdowns, 14-7.

Halfway through the second quarter the Bulldoggers scored two touchdowns within two minutes apart. The Huskies fought hard and with one minute to go in the second quarter scored their final touchdown of the night, 27-13.

Ten Osages sit on the Hominy football roster this year

The Hominy Bucks lost their first football game of the season against the Cleveland Tigers on Aug. 30.

“We didn’t tackle very well in the open field and Cleveland did a good job of tackling our weaknesses,” said Hominy Coach Scott Harmon.

The Tigers did not waste any time during the first quarter as they took the lead, 21-0.

The Tigers continued to dominate and by halftime the score was 41-0.

Coach Dobbins’ legacy lives on in grandson who is a junior for the Hominy Bucks

When the purple and white pride seeps into the fall Hominy air at Buck Memorial Field, a handful of football diehards can almost see Curtis Pratt Dobbins make his way out of the home locker room.

Some who know him as “Mr. Hominy Buck” noticed him by his robust football build, others by the stern sketch upon his face.

And some, like Scott Lohah, who played under Dobbins in the 1960s, know it’s him by the chills that pulse through this body.

Pawhuska beats Hominy 39-6

This year’s Battle of the Osage victory goes to the Pawhuska Huskies.

In a 39-6 win over the Hominy Bucks (1-2) last Friday, Pawhuska (2-1) earned its bragging rights for the next year.

Coming off a tough loss to Perry the week before, the Huskies were ready for the highly anticipated crusade.

Pawhuska head coach Eddy Scott said his team tied up some loose ends and felt prepared for the game.

Pawhuska Huskies play Sperry and the Lady Huskies play Verdigris. Both teams play Thursday in Verdigris

It was quite the weekend for six local girls and boy’s basketball teams in Osage County.

Four teams, the Woodland girls and boys team and the Hominy girls and boys team ended their seasons in the district play, after losing in the first or second round of the post season. Moving on was both the Pawhuska boys and girls teams who both play in Verdigris Thursday.

Hominy Lady Bucks will host Ripley High School for District 2A Playoffs Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the new gym

Hominy drew top-2A team Ripley for their district game this Friday in Hominy at 6:30 p.m.

Ripley is a top 15 team in 2A and if they beat Hominy, Hominy will have lost their chance to move on to the regional tournament.

Pawhuska will travel to Inola Saturday for district playoffs; Hominy will play at home

Just in time.

It’s a phrase Pawhuska boy’s basketball coach Monty Unruh has wanted to say since late November.

The team has dealt with some unpredictable ups and downs, with injuries and illnesses, but with the district part of the season vastly approaching, things have begun to look up, starting with the 52-43 victory over Hominy last night in the last regular-season game.

Unruh said it was a good way to start district play.
