Inauguration to be held in the Congressional Chambers at 10 a.m. July 4

The recently elected Third Osage Nation Congress members will be sworn into office July 4 at 10 a.m. in the Congressional Chambers on the government campus in Pawhuska.

Those six Osages will serve four-year terms after being elected to the Legislative Branch in the June 4 General Election.

Serving on the Third ON Congress are: RJ Walker, John F. Maker, Archie L. Mason, Shannon Love Edwards, Maria Whitehorn and John Jech.

Unofficial results: Two incumbents reelected, all proposed Constitutional amendments fail; Provisional ballots to be counted Wednesday

The Osage people elected four new Congressional members in the 2012 General Election and re-elected two incumbents to serve on the Third ON Congress, according to preliminary results.

In complete, but unofficial results, RJ Walker, John F. Maker, Maria Whitehorn and John Jech were voted in and incumbents Shannon Edwards and Archie Mason were re-elected in the June 4 election.

Three Osage Nation Congressional candidates file on day one; No one files on day two

Three Osages have filed their candidacy papers – thus far – for the 2012 General Election in which six Osage Nation Congressional seats are up for grabs.

On day two of the filing period, no Osages filed candidacy papers, according to the ON Election Office on March 16. The filing period stretches through April 2.

The day before, three candidates filed their papers by closing time. Berbon Hamilton was the first to file and later in the day Rosemary Shaw and John Maker did the same.

Osage language instructors teach Northern California Osages language basics

Officials with the Osage Nation Language Program conducted a day-long seminar last month with the Northern California Osage Group, teaching its attendees the language basics.

Language Program Director Herman “Mogri” Lookout and instructors John Maker and Talee Red Corn traveled to the group’s May 16 meeting in Petaluma, Calif., and gave a presentation on their program and beginner-level language lessons. Lookout said it was the first time the Language Program conducted this type of seminar for the Northern California Osage Group.

Osage Language Program students and instructors featured in OETA documentary to be aired tonight, May 31 and June 11 and 25

The Osage Nation’s Language Program is featured in an hour-long OETA documentary on preserving Native American languages and culture, now airing on the Oklahoma Network.

An Oklahoma Educational Television Association crew visited with language program officials in April and recorded several hours of the language classes, student activities and those who teach them. The documentary, titled, “We Shall Remain,” is part of the OETA’s “Stateline” series.
