Proposed changes to the federal regulations governing the three Osage Indian Villages are sparking discussions on whether the Osage Nation should create and pass its own laws to run the villages with less federal oversight.

Hun-Kah Session ends without confirmation of Eddy Red Eagle Jr. to ONES LLC Board

The Third Osage Nation Congress adjourned the 2013 Hun-Kah Session on its 24th and final day of session April 22 after fast tracking and voting on several pieces of legislation.

The three-day session extension approved by majority Congressional vote last week will not be used. The remaining legislative bills and resolutions passed by Congress were sent to Principal Chief John Red Eagle’s office for his consideration.

For the first time the ONPD had to secure a van to transport prisoners

The Osage Nation Police Department transported a record amount of prisoners to the Osage Nation Courts on April 4.

“At first it was kind of a shock because we had never in ONPD history needed a van to transport prisoners,” said Osage Nation Chief of Police, Nick Williams.

Supreme Court issues April 19 deadline for Chief Red Eagle’s office

The Osage Nation Supreme Court could issue a decision by next week in the case involving Principal Chief John Red Eagle’s appointment of his older brother Eddy Red Eagle Jr. to the Osage Nation Energy Services LLC Board.

Congress asks Supreme Court for a declaratory judgment on Chief Red Eagle’s appointment of older brother to board

The Third Osage Nation Congress is asking the Osage Nation Supreme Court to declare Principal Chief John Red Eagle’s appointment of his brother Eddy Red Eagle Jr. to the Osage Nation Energy Services LLC Board unconstitutional, according to tribal court documents.

ON Treasurer filed motion to quash first subpoena in Osage Nation Trial Court after the signature page of subpoena was missing

Osage Nation Treasurer Callie Catcher filed a motion to quash the congressional subpoena that asks for the consulting contract and any other contract Rod Hartness may have had with the Nation for the past 12 months.

The Tulsa Federal Grand Jury will decide if indictments will be issued. The grand jury meets monthly at the end of the month.

As of March 22, Osage Nation Attorney General Jeff Jones said he had no updates to report regarding the federal and tribal law enforcement investigations of the former Pawhuska Indian Village Five-Man Board activities and finances.

Lecture series will cover Native American law

Philip Tinker, an Osage attorney and member of the Deer Clan, will be presenting a lecture, “A Move to Another Country: Nation building and the 2006 Osage Constitution,” at the Osage Cultural Center on Friday, March 15, at 10 a.m. This lecture considers the development of the tribe from the development of the Osage Confederacy into the modern period, focusing on how the tribe’s traditional political culture impacted the development of the 2006 Constitution.

Pawnee/Osage CASA volunteer program advocate for abused, neglected children; Annual CASA birdhouse auction scheduled Dec. 13 in Pawhuska

Nikki Lorenzo’s workday depends on the needs of children at the heart of abuse and neglect. Children lost in the system of both state and tribal courts.

As a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) worker, Lorenzo works with families, especially children, and provides reports and recommendations on the cases to a judge. Those reports help the courts determine what is in the best interests of the children involved.

The Pawnee/ Osage Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will hold its fourth annual fundraising birdhouse auction on Thursday Dec. 13 in the Parish Hall at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pawhuska starting at 7 p.m. All proceeds will go toward the operations for CASA, a nonprofit, that recruits, trains and supports volunteers to represent abused and neglected children in tribal and state court cases.

From rounding up cows to arresting drunk drivers, ONPD does it all

I had an eye-opening experience when I had the opportunity to ride along with the Osage Nation Police Department.

First of all I didn’t know ONPD had a ride along program but when I found out I jumped on the opportunity.

I went out on a Saturday night with Officer Nick Silva. I had no idea what to expect, I was just excited to be riding shot gun with an officer. Plus their new cop cars are pretty sweet.

Tribal Court officials displaced since late March; court being held at Wakon Iron Hall in the Pawhuska Indian Village

Osage Nation Tribal Court has been held at Wakon Iron Hall in the Pawhuska Indian Village since April. The reason: stachybotrys mold.

Stachybotrys, also known as black mold, was discovered in every room of the courthouse forcing the Nation’s Properties Department to evacuate all four employees working in the Judicial building. The employees, which included then-Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Lohah, are Trial Court Judge Marvin Stepson and two court clerks.

Drent replaces Chief Justice Charles Lohah who stepped down for personal reasons

Osage Nation Principal Chief John Red Eagle has appointed Meredith Drent as Acting Chief Justice of the Osage Nation Supreme Court.

Drent, Osage, will replace former Chief Justice Charles Lohah, who is stepping down due to health reasons. Lohah, 78, was diagnosed with lung cancer in March of last year. He said the cancer is terminal.

“I just thought I would relax for awhile, enjoy what time I have left,” he said.

Terri Silva is the second female police officer to work with the ONPD

Terri Silva always wanted to work for the Osage Nation Police Department and in March her dream finally came true.

“For a long time I wanted to come work for the Osage Nation because it is in the roots of my family,” Silva said.

Silva is the second Osage female police officer to join the ON Police Department. The first Osage female police officer was Martha Donelson who worked for the ON from 2004-2007.

Mashunkashey worked in the court system as a mediator during land disputes for 30-plus years

The Osage County District Court system surprised Osage elder Bill Mashunkashey Sr. March 30 with a citation of commendation for his work as a court case mediator in land disputes.

His work stretches for more than 30 years involving land issues, which earned the respect of many people working in the court system who relied on his work during litigation. He is retired and will be 89 this year.

Nation remains opposed to wind farm development in Osage County; Nation officials say they will pursue other efforts to prevent Wind Capital Group project from being built

The Osage Nation, through the Osage Minerals Council, dropped its appeal of the wind farm trial verdict Feb. 22. The appeal was filed to prevent a 94-turbine project from being built in western Osage County.

Treasurer William Kemble challenges Congressional subpoena over six months of emails demanded; ON Trial Court Judge to rule on case

The debate over a 2011 Congressional subpoena demanding six months worth of emails from Treasurer William Kemble is now being considered in Osage Nation Trial Court.

Attorneys for the Second Osage Nation Congress and Kemble argued for their clients at the Tribal Courthouse during a Jan. 26 hearing. Judge Marvin Stepson will rule on the Congressional subpoena being challenged by Kemble.

Notice of appeal has been filed in federal court, to be considered in 10th Circuit Court of Appeals

The Osage Nation has filed a notice of appeal in the wind farm lawsuit against the Missouri company planning the 94-turbine project near Burbank.

The appeal notice was filed Thursday Jan. 19 and will be up for consideration at the United States Court of Appeals 10th Circuit in Denver.
