Language Department recognized for their Osage language preservation, revitalization efforts; Award recognition set for Oct. 19 NIEA banquet

The National Indian Education Association is honoring the Osage Nation Language Department for its Osage language teaching and preservation efforts.

The ON Language Department is a recipient of the William Demmert Cultural Freedom Award for their efforts to preserve and revitalize the Osage language among Osages of all ages.

“It is something positive for the department and it’s encouraging that we are being recognized,” said Herman “Mogri” Lookout, director of the Osage Nation Language Department.

Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served at noon and kids can enjoy the bounce house and cotton candy.

The class is held for Osage Nation employees but is also open to the public. Lunch with Language is geared toward those who don't have time outside of work or free time during regular night classes to learn the Osage Language.

The Osage Nation Language Department is recognizing participants who attend the weekly “Lunch with Language” course offered to the public this year.

The Lunch with Language course targets students, especially government employees, who may not be able to attend weeknight language courses when they are typically held during fall and spring sessions. This session’s courses were held Tuesdays during the noon lunch hour.

In my memory there are Old Men speaking to The People in our unique and ancient language of Osage

My childhood memory retains many images of Old Men and Women, dressed Osage. In my memory there are Old Men speaking to The People in our unique and ancient language of Osage.  I remember how sometimes those Old Men would move their Eagle Fans in order to bring life to a thought they were expressing. There were times when they did not hold a fan. During those times they were simply wearing a blanket, it did not matter, they were something to see and to hear.

Osage language classes run through April

The Osage Nation Language Department classes resume this week for the Spring 2012 semester through April 28.

A language class in Edmond starts on Jan. 17 featuring Osage I and Osage II. Class time runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays.

A language class in Pawhuska for Osage elders will be held Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. starting Jan. 19.

Speakers of Osage and other tribes with Dhegihan dialect meet, network

Ardina Moore says she and her fellow Quapaw people are pleased with the tribe’s Las Vegas Strip-style casino resort but there are more important things the people must consider: their tribe’s first language, for example.

“We are proud of this casino, but to me, our language and culture are more important,” Moore said during the Dhegiha Gathering language conference held at Downstream Casino Resort.

Tags to be sold by ON Tax Commission starting in October

The Osage Nation license plate is getting a brush-up and will bear the Osage language starting in October.

The landscape artwork on the Osage tribal tag’s bottom half will disappear to make room for the orthography symbols.

Next lunch class session to start in July

The Osage Nation Language Department recognized participants who attended the inaugural “Lunch with Language” course this spring during the final class meeting on May 11.

The Lunch with Language course targets students, especially government employees, who may not be able to attend weeknight language courses when they are typically held during fall and spring sessions. This past session’s courses were held Wednesdays during the noon lunch hour.

Pilot program will test teaching the language via teleconference

Wah.Zha.Zhe I.E. (Osage language) could be coming to a classroom near Osages everywhere.

The Osage Language Department, Osage Information Technology Department, Edmond Public Schools Instructional Technology and the Indian Education program has collaborated to test a pilot program utilizing Microsoft Office Live Meeting to teach language classes via teleconferencing.

PHS is second area high school to offer Osage language courses

The Pawhuska High School honored its students who completed the first Osage language class which started last fall.

Martin Parks, who is the school’s assistant principal and athletic director, presented a wooden plaque with the school’s orange and black colors to Osage Nation Language Department officials and language student Robynn Rulo on July 9. The names of 12 students who took the course were engraved into the plaque.
