Judy Barger gives Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker a photo of the Dawes Commission

Judy Barger has given the Cherokee Nation a piece of history that will be placed in the new Cherokee Nation Clinic in Vinita.

On Nov. 7, Barger (Osage/Cherokee) presented a restored photo of the Dawes Commission to the Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker at the opening of the clinic.

“They were tickled to death to get it and I felt that they (Cherokee Nation) deserved the photo,” Barger said. “It was something unique and a part of history.”

The Pawnee/ Osage Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will hold its fourth annual fundraising birdhouse auction on Thursday Dec. 13 in the Parish Hall at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pawhuska starting at 7 p.m. All proceeds will go toward the operations for CASA, a nonprofit, that recruits, trains and supports volunteers to represent abused and neglected children in tribal and state court cases.

The book chronicles the understanding and implementation of Osage Nation’s 2006 Constitution created by the Osage Government Reform Commission

Osage anthropologist Jean Dennison has chronicled a piece of Osage history and turned it into a book for the Osage people.

Dennison’s book, called “Colonial Entanglement: Constituting a Twenty-First-Century Osage Nation,” depicts the creation, understanding and implementation of Osage Nation’s 2006 Constitution created by the Osage Government Reform Commission.

Nation argues proposed wind farm project violates federal law; turbine construction will interfere with Minerals Estate development

 

The Osage Nation has filed a federal lawsuit seeking an injunction against Wind Capital Group, arguing that a proposed 94-turbine wind farm near Burbank will interfere with oil and gas production on the Osage Minerals Estate.

ON Social Services department offers help if elder abuse or fraud is spotted with Osage shareholders

For the last four years adult and elder abuse has been on the rise in Osage Country, and with the Osage Trust Case Settlement disbursements around the corner the numbers could increase.

Of the $380 million settlement, shareholders, also known as headright holders, will be paid out $155,136 for each share, most of which are owned by elders.

Those who work closely with cases of adult abuse, neglect, exploitation and/or fraud said they have ample concern for those elders who will be receiving large amounts of money.

Any wind turbine cannot block access for developing, producing subsurface minerals, agency says

The Osage Agency’s Bureau of Indian Affairs Superintendent says the office did not approve a wind farm ordinance recently established in Osage County and any wind turbine built “may have to be removed or relocated” if it interferes with the minerals estate.

Project plans includes new VIP lounge, dance floor; Gaming enterprise is now Osage Casino

The Osage Manhattan Builders construction firm has been selected to manage a renovation project at the Sand Springs Osage Casino slated to begin in September.

When completed, the casino will have a new bar, dance floor, new deli/ kitchen area and a VIP lounge. Brock Eubanks, the operations manager for OMB said the renovation would also include new carpeting, walls so “it will look like a totally different facility.”

Joe and Carol Conner describe the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve north of Pawhuska as one of the most pristine spots in the world.

During a sunny day’s drive on the Preserve’s unpaved road, the Conners take in the sunlight, grassy hilltop views and watch small buffalo herds walk across the grassland which hasn’t been developed or farmed on. “If this is not pristine, I don’t know what is,” Joe Conner (Osage) said.

Open house on the wind farm project scheduled July 28 in Pawhuska

A St. Louis-based energy company interested in building a wind farm in Osage County is holding a public meeting on Thursday July 28 at the Pawhuska Elks Lodge.

Wind Capital Group has filed an application to build the wind farm on prairie land west of Pawhuska, according to The Bigheart Times. The application for the 8,300 acre, 150-megawatt wind farm was filed with Osage County government officials on July 8.

Police Lt. Nicholas Williams named Interim Chief

On June 8, the Osage Nation Executive Branch announced a change in command for the Nation’s Police Department.

Police Lt. Nicholas “Nick” Williams has been named Interim Chief, according to a news release. Williams replaces former police Chief John Drexil who is stepping down from the post to work as a police sergeant.

Grant program targets local entities interested in developing facilities to promote a healthy lifestyle among Osage youth; New deadline is Aug. 19

The application deadline for the Osage Nation’s 2011 Community Challenge Grant program has been extended to Aug. 19.

“The matching grant promotes an active lifestyle for Osage youth,” Jennifer Tiger, Director of Strategic Planning & Grants Management, said in a statement. “With childhood obesity, diabetes and other diseases on the rise, this grant’s goal is to ensure the healthy growth of our communities.”

Tulsa’s WNBA team to honor Oklahoma tribes during its annual Native American Heritage Night

The Osage Nation is one of several Oklahoma tribes to be honored during the Tulsa Shock’s annual Native American Heritage Night on Friday July 15.

The WNBA team hosts the Los Angeles Sparks for a 7 p.m. home game that night.

For the second season in its two-year existence the WNBA basketball team is continuing its tradition of honoring the region’s Native tribes. There are 39 federally recognized Native American tribes headquartered in Oklahoma.

The Second Osage Nation Congress is meeting for its Fifth Special Session starting at 10 a.m. Monday Jan. 24 in the Congressional Chambers.

The Congress is slated to consider at least six items during the special session including fiscal year 2011 budget modifications; policies and procedures for the Nation’s Office of Fiscal Performance and Review; a communication protocol between the Congress and Principal Chief John Red Eagle’s office; and a Congressional confirmation of Jeff Jones for Attorney General.

More than a 100 invitations have gone out to local, county and state officials inviting them to the Osage Nation's Day of Reconciliation and Unity.

As promised, Chief John Red Eagle is hosting the day to restore unity between the Nation and its neighbors, according to a prepared release. Guest speakers and a meal at noon are on the agenda. The day begins at 10 a.m. at the Osage County Fairgrounds in Pawhuska.

OK Tax Commission has until Jan. 11 to respond to the Nation's appeal

The Oklahoma state Tax Commission has received a 50-day extension on its deadline to respond to the Osage Nation's appeal in the long-standing case being challenged at the U.S. Supreme Court level. In another recent development, the National Congress of American Indians is siding with the Osages in this case and filed an amicus curiae brief during the Thanksgiving holiday week.

FAIRFAX, Okla. – Paradox Consulting, which issued the health surveys to Osage citizens applying for the $500 health benefit card earlier this year, says changes in everyday behavior can help those in fair or poor health extend their life span by avoiding future medical complications.

Gaming Commission expansion bill is subject to NIGC approval

The Second Osage Nation Congress passed two bills during its Oct. 4 session, one of which will expand the Gaming Commission from one to three members.

Ten Congress members unanimously passed ONCA 10-73, a bill sponsored by Congressman Mark Simms to expand the Gaming Commission. Also unanimously passed by Congress was ONCA 10-79 which is “An Act to Improve Congressional Oversight of the Osage Nation Gaming Enterprise.” Its sponsor is Congressman Geoffrey Standing Bear.

Osage Nation Head Start of Fairfax and Pawhuska joined in the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association fundraising

Osage Nation Head Start of Fairfax and Pawhuska joined in the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association fundraising events to support the “Win-Win” campaign against cancer. The fundraising efforts took place all over the state during the week of Sept. 13.

The children range in age from three to five-years-old but the staff at the nation’s head start programs feel it is never too early to teach children to be aware of the importance of helping others, according to a prepared release.

 TULSA, Okla. – The Osage Nation’s first-ever Watershed Forum brought representatives from tribes around the state to discuss the importance of natural resource preservation Aug. 24.

Watersheds are important to many Native American tribes, including the Osage, because they are viewed as playing a role in spirituality and identity.
