The BIA Osage Agency has a new acting superintendent and no one is saying why, on the record.

Rhonda Loftin will be filling in for Osage Agency Superintendent Melissa Currey while she is out of the office for 120 days.

Health group overseeing project still finalizing plans; Matching fund donation and $99,600 federal grant are supporting the project

Efforts are underway in Skiatook to bring a community health clinic to the town thanks to a federal grant and a $75,000 matching fund from the Osage Nation.

On Oct. 19, Principal Chief John Red Eagle presented the $75,000 matching fund check to the Focus Health Group overseeing the Skiatook Community Health Clinic project. The group is also a recipient of a $99,600 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to build the clinic in the former junior high school on South Osage Avenue.

Food truck to open for a one-month trial run Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Update on grocery business negotiations scheduled for Oct. 29 Osage Nation Congressional committee 11:30 a.m. meeting

While Osage Nation officials consider prospects for the former Palace of the Osage Grocery store building in Fairfax, a temporary store rolled into town as a single-day food shopping option on Oct. 24.

The mobile farmers market – built in a former school bus – is operated by a co-op of regional farmers and food makers called the Oklahoma Farm to Fork Market. The food truck parked next to the vacant Palace building and set up shop for three hours selling fresh and organic-based foods to area residents now living without a grocery store for over a year.

Election comes in wake of former chairman's resignation and ON Congressional audit reporting over $800,000 in village money is unaccounted for; First new village board meeting is Monday Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at Wakon Iron

Pawhuska Indian Village residents elected five Osage women on Oct. 10 to represent them on the Five-Man Board. This is the first time in recent memory the Pawhuska board is comprised of all women who will serve one-year terms until the next regular village election in October 2013.

Serving on the Five-Man Board are: Paula Stabler (chairperson); Paula Farid (vice-chair); Renee Harris (treasurer); Asa Cunningham (secretary) and Jodel Heath (member). The board is holding its first meeting  Monday Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Wakon Iron community building.

Drent appointed to a two-year term on the Nation's High Court

The Third Osage Nation Congress confirmed Meredith Drent for the ON Supreme Court Chief Justice position on Sept. 12. She is the Nation’s second Chief Justice for the High Court and will serve a two-year term.

Drent was appointed as Supreme Court Associate Justice when the 2006 reformed government launched and she was retained by popular vote in the 2010 General Election. Drent (Osage) fills the Chief Justice seat after her predecessor, Charles Lohah, stepped down due to health reasons earlier this year.

Fairfax area residents seeking help from the Osage Nation to open a grocery store protested what they believe is little action taken by elected leaders, thus far, during closing day of the 2012 Tzi-Zho Session.

Language Department recognized for their Osage language preservation, revitalization efforts; Award recognition set for Oct. 19 NIEA banquet

The National Indian Education Association is honoring the Osage Nation Language Department for its Osage language teaching and preservation efforts.

The ON Language Department is a recipient of the William Demmert Cultural Freedom Award for their efforts to preserve and revitalize the Osage language among Osages of all ages.

“It is something positive for the department and it’s encouraging that we are being recognized,” said Herman “Mogri” Lookout, director of the Osage Nation Language Department.

U.S. Secretary of Treasury to verify all code talker recipients of gold and silver medals

The commemorative Code Talker Congressional Gold Medal coins being produced by the U.S. Mint in honor of the Osage Nation has left Osages confused.

Prior to the news of the U.S. Mint producing the coins, many Osages didn’t know the plan existed and after learning about it, were skeptical there were Osage code talkers at all.

According to John Henry Mashunkashey, Osage elder, veteran, and one of the people responsible for the design, said to his knowledge there weren’t Osage Code Talkers in WWII.

Charles Maker and Howard “Skip” Iba ask to be withdrawn from reconfirmation by the ON Congress; Chief Red Eagle to appoint two new board members

Two seats on the Osage Limited Liability Company’s Board of Directors are vacant after Charles Maker and Howard “Skip” Iba stepped down from the board.

Maker and Iba, who were first appointed and confirmed for three-year LLC board terms in 2009, were up for reconfirmation during this year’s Hun-Kah Session, which ends Thursday April 19.

Holiday recognizes anniversary of the 2006 tribal government; Celebratory dance to be held Friday night at Osage County Fairgrounds

The Osage Nation is celebrating Osage Sovereignty Day today (March 9).

The day pays homage to the reformed tribal government now entering its sixth year. The 2006 Osage Constitution was signed on March 11 that year.

A celebratory dance starts this afternoon at the Osage County Fairgrounds Ag Building (south of Pawhuska off State Highway 99).

All tribal government offices will be closed today and will reopen Monday March 12.

Commission is responsible for overseeing War Memorial construction: War Memorial’s goal is ‘to provide a physical reminder to the present and future generations of the contributions and sacrifices of the Osage veterans’

The Osage Nation is seeking Osages to fill five positions on the Osage War Memorial Commission.

This commission will be responsible for making construction and administration of an Osage War Memorial a reality.

Former Cherokee Nation Treasurer Callie Catcher appointed to fill top ON financial officer post; Her appointment is subject to ON Congressional confirmation

A former Cherokee Nation Treasurer has been appointed by Osage Nation Principal Chief John Red Eagle to oversee the tribe’s accounting and financial operations.

Chief Red Eagle appointed Callie M. Catcher (Cherokee) to be the Nation’s treasurer, according to a March 5 statement from his office. Catcher’s appointment will be subject to confirmation by the ON Congress, which meets later this month for the 2012 Hun-Kah Session.

Julie O’keefe owns The Grayhorse Group, fills fifth vacant spot on board

Osage Nation Principal Chief John Red Eagle has appointed an Osage entrepreneur to the final vacant seat on the ON Foundation Board which is the nonprofit charity arm of the Nation.

Julie O’keefe will serve as interim Foundation Board member, a position subject to ON Congressional confirmation during the forthcoming 2012 Hun-Kah Session. She was sworn as a board member by Trial Court Judge Marvin Stepson on Feb. 16.

ON Congress passes resolution for 2012 health benefit card limits; Osages must re-enroll in program to receive health card

Osages age 65 and over now have a $1,000 limit on their health benefit card for the 2012 calendar year.

During its 13th Special Session, the Second Osage Nation Congress unanimously passed a resolution (ONCR 12-05), which authorizes the Treasurer to set the higher maximum payable amount for elder health benefit card users this year.

Commission raises questions over lawsuit after license holder passes away

The Osage Tax Commission is questioning the status of a lawsuit filed against the entity in July by an Osage smoke shop operator who is challenging the border tax levied against the tobacco shop.

The July 6 lawsuit filed by “Highway 123 Smokeshop” in the Osage Nation Tribal Court objects to the border tax charged by the Tax Commission. The border tax is levied against smoke shops within 20 miles of the Kansas border. The Highway 123 Smokeshop, just west of Bartlesville, is one of two shops falling into that category.

Osage Nation remains opposed, ‘disappointed’; legal action being considered

The Osage County Board of Adjustment unanimously voted in favor for a Missouri-based wind farm company to build 94 wind turbines in western Osage County near Burbank. Construction on the project could start this fall and would be finished in about one year.

Amid concerns shared by an Osage Nation official and discussion surrounding the communication between St. Louis-based Wind Capital Group and the Nation, the board voted 4-0 to approve a zoning variance for the land originally designated for agricultural use.

Web site's purpose: A tool to navigate the administration, learn how the President’s agenda is helping Native communities

The official White House photo featuring a Presidential meeting of several tribal leaders, including Osage Nation Principal Chief John Red Eagle, is being used on the White House’s new Web site for Native Americans.

The Web site features blog postings, videos and news articles related to Native Americans. The Web site also features links to various resources such as federal government departments and prepared statements and news releases.

Funeral services scheduled Wednesday in Hominy

Harry Red Eagle Jr. is known for his countless contributions to many Osage generations as a family man, cultural and spiritual mentor, language teacher, politician and friend. In the end, he earned respect, appreciation, countless friendships and became “Uncle Harry” to many of those who looked up to him.

Red Eagle, a lifelong resident of Hominy, passed away Saturday July 30 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. He was 90.

Atterberry served on First ON Congress; will help Executive Branch implement merit-based employment system

Osage Nation Principal Chief John Red Eagle has appointed former ON Congresswoman Debra Atterberry to be his senior executive adviser.

Chief Red Eagle made the announcement during a July 28 all-employee meeting for tribal government workers. She received applause after standing for recognition at the meeting.

Atterberry said she is excited to be working with Chief Red Eagle’s office. She started working in the Executive Branch on July 25, she said after the employee meeting.
