Interim board member appointment comes in wake of new legislation prohibiting ON board and commission members from serving beyond their terms

The Osage Nation Executive and Legislative branches of government are seeking two appointees to serve on the Editorial Board after both branches did not reappoint and confirm two board members earlier this year when those terms expired. The board’s third position also expired this year.

In the meantime, the Third ON Congress voted to appoint former Congressional Speaker Jerri Jean Branstetter to a six-month interim Editorial Board term. Congresswoman Shannon Edwards made the motion on Oct. 1 – the last day of the Tzi-Zho Session.

To Osage News Readers:

Earlier this week we learned that new legislation from the Osage Congress effectively ends our service as members of the Osage Nation Editorial Board. We respect the law and end our terms hopeful that our work has established a stable foundation for a free and independent press in the Osage Nation. Though we were appointed by Osage Nation governmental bodies, our commitment has always been to you as Osage readers and to the principles of a free press.

Manthey served on the Nation's Editorial Council in 2008

On behalf of the Osage Nation Editorial Board, I am pleased to announce the board’s appointment of Tara McLain Manthey as a member. Manthey, an Osage tribal member, will serve a one-year term as mandated by amendments to the Osage Independent Press Act. Teresa Trumbly Lamsam completed her term as a board member this spring.

The Osage News is a member of the Oklahoma Press Association

The Osage News won six Oklahoma Press Association awards in its first year of participation in the OPA Better Newspaper Contest.

The News placed in the following award categories, which include news content; layout and design; feature writing and photography in its respective category. The OPA also awarded the News first place for personal columns during the 2011 contest period.

Polls show favorites for the race to be Jim Ryan, Matthew Shunkamolah, Nicki Revard Lorenzo and John F. Maker

If you put stock in online polls, which I don’t, but if you do then the three online Osage News Election Polls published throughout the month of May will show you four candidates who have continuously gotten in the top six.

They are Jim Ryan, Matthew Shunkamolah, Nicki Revard Lorenzo and John F. Maker.

Our way of giving a small wink to the United States government who is having similar struggles.

Beginning in October, the Osage News will be reduced to one newspaper per household.

“It is our goal to drive readers to our Osage News Web site, making it their primary source for information,” said Osage News Editor Shannon Shaw. “The news industry is changing to a more online, multi-media based information tool and we are changing with it.”

ESPN2 will be bringing its “Friday Night Fights” show to the Osage Million Dollar Elm Casino in Tulsa on Feb. 25

ESPN2 will be bringing its “Friday Night Fights” show to the Osage Million Dollar Elm Casino in Tulsa on Feb. 25. This fight match will be televised live from the Osage Event Center starting at 7 p.m.

The main event will feature 10 fight rounds between Juan Carlos Burgos and Cristobal Cruz. A co-feature fight is also scheduled with Maxim Vlasov vs. Issac Chilembe. Tickets went on sale this week and are $35 each.

The Second Osage Nation Congress is meeting for its Fifth Special Session starting at 10 a.m. Monday Jan. 24 in the Congressional Chambers.

The Congress is slated to consider at least six items during the special session including fiscal year 2011 budget modifications; policies and procedures for the Nation’s Office of Fiscal Performance and Review; a communication protocol between the Congress and Principal Chief John Red Eagle’s office; and a Congressional confirmation of Jeff Jones for Attorney General.

The Red Eagle administration will not be paying contractors for work done without a signed and executed contract, a practice that was done by the Gray administration and something that the new administration said was not good business practice.

Film also stars Oscar-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem. Film crew mum to the public as to film’s plot.

Pawhuskans have been in a frenzy as Hollywood mega-stars Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem and Barry Pepper have been walking the streets of downtown Pawhuska filming for an upcoming and untitled project by director Terrence Malick.

Malick, whose credits include The Thin Red Line, The New World, is famously secretive about his upcoming projects and is said to be the writer as well as the director for the project. Film crews and representatives were tight-lipped as to the film’s plot.

Council preps for Osage Oil & Gas Summit Oct. 27-29

The Osage Minerals Council is seeking an attorney.

At the OMC Oct. 8 meeting, Chairman Dudley Whitehorn told the attendees that only one attorney had come forth after asking his fellow council members to submit names for consideration. That attorney was Tulsa-based attorney William “Bill” Grimm, attorney for Jech vs. United States. The Jech case, if won, could abolish the Osage Constitution and which Whitehorn is also a plaintiff.

FAIRFAX, Okla. – Paradox Consulting, which issued the health surveys to Osage citizens applying for the $500 health benefit card earlier this year, says changes in everyday behavior can help those in fair or poor health extend their life span by avoiding future medical complications.

Gaming Commission expansion bill is subject to NIGC approval

The Second Osage Nation Congress passed two bills during its Oct. 4 session, one of which will expand the Gaming Commission from one to three members.

Ten Congress members unanimously passed ONCA 10-73, a bill sponsored by Congressman Mark Simms to expand the Gaming Commission. Also unanimously passed by Congress was ONCA 10-79 which is “An Act to Improve Congressional Oversight of the Osage Nation Gaming Enterprise.” Its sponsor is Congressman Geoffrey Standing Bear.

Osage Nation Head Start of Fairfax and Pawhuska joined in the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association fundraising

Osage Nation Head Start of Fairfax and Pawhuska joined in the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association fundraising events to support the “Win-Win” campaign against cancer. The fundraising efforts took place all over the state during the week of Sept. 13.

The children range in age from three to five-years-old but the staff at the nation’s head start programs feel it is never too early to teach children to be aware of the importance of helping others, according to a prepared release.

Osage Nation Principal Chief John Red Eagle and Assistant Principal Chief Scott BigHorse signed a proclamation Monday declaring the month of October Domestic Violence Awareness Month for the Osage Nation.

 TULSA, Okla. – The Osage Nation’s first-ever Watershed Forum brought representatives from tribes around the state to discuss the importance of natural resource preservation Aug. 24.

Watersheds are important to many Native American tribes, including the Osage, because they are viewed as playing a role in spirituality and identity.

John Bighorse is one of three Osages now serving on the school board

Editor's note: This story was used with permission.

The Pawhuska school board had five applicants to fill the vacancy created by the death of Dr. Mike Priest, and after meeting behind closed doors Aug. 9, the remaining members made their choice: John Star Bighorse.

Bighorse, who works as an inspector the Osage Nation Tax Commission, will serve until Feb. 8 of 2011, when Priest's term would have expired.
