The Cougars will meet Wayne to defend their Class A championship title at the Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater on Dec. 10 at 1 p.m.

After what seemed like a breezy regular and post season, Woodland is back in the state championship game to defend their Class A title.

Woodland defeated Thomas-Fay-Custer, 32-7, on Dec. 2, in a semi-final matchup in Enid.

The freezing temperature, sleet-turf field and weak Thomas defense wasn’t enough to hold the Cougars back, 13-0, for a chance to defend their title.

Woodland coach Joe Sindelar said his team executed well despite the conditions.

Coach Dobbins’ legacy lives on in grandson who is a junior for the Hominy Bucks

When the purple and white pride seeps into the fall Hominy air at Buck Memorial Field, a handful of football diehards can almost see Curtis Pratt Dobbins make his way out of the home locker room.

Some who know him as “Mr. Hominy Buck” noticed him by his robust football build, others by the stern sketch upon his face.

And some, like Scott Lohah, who played under Dobbins in the 1960s, know it’s him by the chills that pulse through this body.

Pawhuska beats Hominy 39-6

* Editor's Note: This story has been revised for accuracy (July 24, 2012)

This year’s Battle of the Osage victory goes to the Pawhuska Huskies.

In a 39-6 win over the Hominy Bucks (1-2) last Friday, Pawhuska (2-1) earned its bragging rights for the next year.

Coming off a tough loss to Perry the week before, the Huskies were ready for the highly anticipated crusade.

Pawhuska head coach Eddy Scott said his team tied up some loose ends and felt prepared for the game.

The Lucky Ones had a rough start to their season but won their first championship this year

Softball is about a lot of things.

But for four Osage girls and their coach the last three months of coach-pitch softball has been about the last six games.

The Lucky Ones, an 8-and-under softball team out of Pawhuska, had a rough start to their season but won six straight games in the end-of-the season tournament and won their first championship, 11-10 and the if-game, 9-7 on June 22.

Kylie Johnson, Ben Goodeagle and Matthew Free represent the Osage Nation at the games

It was early May when Kylie Johnson’s mobile phone rang as she made her way out the door of a drug store.

It was just moments before the state track meet in Oklahoma City and after she found out she didn’t make the Oklahoma All-State team, when she found out she was selected for the 16th Annual Oklahoma Indian All-State.

“I was speechless, I wanted to cry,” she said. “I was a little worried about not making it for All-State and then my dream just came true.”

Dillon Lookout is breaking records and giving back along the way

Dillon Lookout was in trouble.

He was the last one to jump in the 6A state championship boys pole vault finals and didn’t even have to make the leap, but he wanted to.

He missed the first two jumps and on the third he tucked his pole under his right arm, charged and threw his body over the pole.

“On his third jump if he would have missed it he would have gone home,” said Lookout’s grandfather Mike Jones. “He (Lookout) took a deep breath and said a prayer.”

Jenks High School students Dillon Lookout and McKenzie Labadie win gold

The days spent in uncomfortable winds and under the scorching sun are officially over as the Oklahoma high school state track meets wrapped up last weekend.

A handful of Osage athletes throughout the state represented their roots well from class 6A to 1A.

Some made personal bests and others won gold.

In the big school class 6A, Jenks’ Dillon Lookout and Mckenzie Labadie took home gold medals.

Lookout, a junior, placed first in 6A boys pole vault with a 16-0 mark, out jumping Yukon senior Tanner Ramsey by one whole foot.

Cole Brumley credits his grandfather for getting him into the sport

Cole Brumley practically grew up in his grandfather’s backyard, with a gun and a trap thrower.

When he was old enough his dad bought he and his brother BB guns. At age 10 he had his first shotgun. At 12-years-old his grandfather gave him his best gun – a Benelli shotgun. And now, the 15-year-old Woodland freshman will compete in his first and only National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational.

Brumley, Osage, said it was not too long ago that he was shooting clay pigeons with his cousins in his grandfather, David Surprise’s, backyard.

Track and field isn’t exactly one of my favorite sports to cover but one talented young Osage pole-vaulter by the name of Dillon Lookout changed that last Friday

Track and field isn’t exactly one of my favorite sports to cover but one talented young Osage pole-vaulter by the name of Dillon Lookout changed that last Friday.

I drove to Owasso High School to look into a story about Lookout, a pole-vaulter, who attends Jenks High School in Tulsa, but has roots in Pawhuska.

Lookout, a junior, has pole-vaulted since he was a sophomore.

For the last two years he’s moved up the national rankings and is now seeded the No. 1 pole-vaulter in the state and the No. 15th in the nation.

Walter Hopper has been playing golf for more than 40 years and winning awards along the way

While most college students were buried in books filled with square roots and experiments, Walter Hopper could be found studying the game of golf.

That was just over 40 years ago and Hopper is more active than he’s ever been in the golf world.

He got his first taste of golf from his grandfather, Fred Lookout. He said he saw how much his grandfather loved the game and it slowly grew on him.

Sonny Eppinette has led his Montana college team to three consecutive AIHEC championships

Sonny Eppinette has a hard time letting go.

When he was a kid no one believed he could play basketball but it wasn’t enough for him to give it up. When he lost his college basketball scholarship he kept on dribbling. And when the Indian Semi-Pro Team he played on fell through, he held a tight grip.

IC Warriors are two-time Ponca City league champions

Every spring a young group of Osage boys lace up their cleats, strap on their shin guards and take to the soccer field in Ponca City.

While most teams in the Ponca City Soccer Incorporation play year round, the Indian Camp Warriors or IC Warriors for short, only play seasonal, yet they are two-time league champions in the 14 and Under Division. And they’re working on their third.

John Star Bighorse, a parent and coach of the team, said it all started out as an innocent idea.

The ‘Wah-Zha-Zhe Girls’ played all-Native teams from Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Iowa and Florida

Before March 16, traveling tournaments meant little to Jayde Drummond.

The Pawhuska High School senior has dribbled a ball for most of her life but played in her first all-Native tournament on March 16-19.

While thousands of ballers gear up for tournament season Drummond and Pawhuska teammate Katie Malone kicked off theirs with a bang in the “For the Love of the Game March Madness’ tournament in Durant.

Pawhuska, Hominy and Woodland gear up for another season

There is nothing like a good surprise early in the season.

With a tough schedule and what looks like will be a tough season, Pawhuska baseball coach Brandon Poteet will take anything he can get from his team.

In an early season game against down-the-road rivals Hominy, the Huskies came out on top with a 12-2 win on March 11.

Poteet said he knew they’d be strong on pitching but that wasn’t quite how they got their win.

Talon and Cherylyn Satepauhoodle lend their talents to the Hominy Bucks

When Talon and Cherylyn Satepauhoodle were in the fourth grade they felt the need to play basketball.

They didn’t have to but they couldn’t help but scratch the itch.

“I just felt like I wanted to play basketball really bad,” said Talon.

Talon and Cherylyn, Osage and Kiowa, are juniors and starting centers for the Hominy Bucks basketball teams.

Talon, 17 and the older of the two, stands 6 feet 5 ½ inches tall and Cherylyn, 16, isn’t far behind with her 6-foot frame.

Generations of Osage wrestlers leave their mark

For the last six years the Osage words MAN-KI-A-TSIN PA-HYU-SKA have been splashed on the front of the Pawhuska wrestling team’s T-shirts.

In English the words read “Pawhuska Wrestling” and the back reads WA-SHKON, meaning “Do your best.”

The two phrases in the Osage language and the Osage people themselves have carried the long wrestling tradition at Pawhuska High School.

The program started in 1966 and has been home to hundreds of the toughest Osage and non-Osage wrestlers in the state.

Playing back-to-back games took its toll on the Lady Huskies

This time it wasn’t about what the Pawhuska Lady Huskies didn’t do.

They did everything their bodies would allow in a tough matchup with Adair in the second round of the area tournament, where Adair ended Pawhuska’s season 40-19.

After a 62-59 victory over Salina the night before Pawhuska had very little endurance left and had trouble staying afloat with powerhouse-No. 4 in 3A, Adair.

Pawhuska plays Adair in Pryor today at 1:30 p.m.

A scoop of confidence and hint of offense is just what the Pawhuska Lady Huskies needed to overcome the well-rounded Salina in the first round of the area tournament.

After a jittery first half the Lady Huskies sealed the 62-59 win over Salina at Burdick Center in Pryor.

Pawhuska advances to the semi finals of the area bracket and meets Adair today at 1:30 p.m. in Pryor.

Pawhuska coach Mark Shuck said once the nerves passed his girls we’re able to play the way they wanted to.

March 1, 2011

The Lady Huskies will play Salina in Pryor Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

On March 3 Pawhuska will hit the road once again and travel to Pryor where they’ll meet Salina for the area playoffs at 6:30 p.m.

According to okrankings.com, Salina is currently ranked No. 12 and holds an overall record of 17-7.

In the area bracket with Pawhuska is Adair, Keys (Parkhill), and Salina. If Pawhuska wins they will play Adair or Keys, depending on who wins between the two.

Pawhuska Huskies season finished

The Pawhuska Lady Huskies aren’t ready to give up.

This year’s 19-7, ranked No. 16 in 3A girls basketball team used the regional playoffs to show just what they’re made of, even when they were pushed up against the wall.

Pawhuska traveled to Verdigris Feb. 24 and took a close 42-38 loss to the Lady Cardinals.

The loss dropped them into the regional losers bracket where they traveled to Inola for a match up with Nowata Feb. 25.
