There are four outgoing members of Congress: Jerri Jean Branstetter, Mark Simms, Anthony Shackelford and Eddy Red Eagle. They served the People well.

It will happen on Wednesday, July Fourth, Inauguration Day, when six honorable Osages will take the Oath of Office as members of the Third Osage Nation Congress. The Osage Constitution that was voted on, and ratified by the Osage People requires it.

We had many good and qualified candidates for Osage Congress this election, and it is appropriate that we thank each of them for debating the issues that our Nation is faced with at this point in our history.

The sun is out, Osages are happy and the rest of Election Day awaits.

Election Day has arrived and Osages are going to the poll to exercise their Constitutional right to vote.

Rick Luttrell and Sonya Holloway were the first two Osage voters to arrive, signing in promptly at 8 a.m. Others soon followed, all seeming to be in jovial moods.

More than four inches of rain fall overnight in Osage County creating a flood warning; today’s high: 94 degrees

Osage Congressional candidates and their families spent the morning hours setting up camp amid puddles and mud left by overnight and early morning rains while others fixed their tents toppled by the storm.

Shortly before 8 a.m. the sun started to peek out from the clouds as camp site work continued at the picnic area on the Osage government campus and voters started lining up nearby at the Congressional chambers to cast ballots.

Election Day is Monday and Osages will be deciding who will be the next six members on the Third Osage Nation Congress.

On the ballot for the Osage General Election June 4 will be 34 candidates and seven possible amendments to the Osage Nation Constitution.

The poll opens at 8 a.m. and is located at the Osage Nation Congressional Chambers and closes at 8 p.m. The results of the election will be announced that evening.

Polls show favorites for the race to be Jim Ryan, Matthew Shunkamolah, Nicki Revard Lorenzo and John F. Maker

If you put stock in online polls, which I don’t, but if you do then the three online Osage News Election Polls published throughout the month of May will show you four candidates who have continuously gotten in the top six.

They are Jim Ryan, Matthew Shunkamolah, Nicki Revard Lorenzo and John F. Maker.

Absentee voters are required to submit a legible copy of their government-issued photo identification card with ballot request form

The deadline is less than a week away for Osages to submit their absentee ballot request forms into the Election Office for the June 4 General Election.

May 15 is the final day the Osage Nation Election Office will accept absentee ballot requests from Osages who do not plan on voting in-person on Election Day in Pawhuska.

So far, the Election Office reports its number of absentee ballot requests have exceeded the number requested in the 2010 General Election.

March 15 marks the first day Osages can register to become official candidates for the Third Osage Nation Congress

Osage congressional hopefuls can now register to be official candidates for the 2012 Osage General Election June 4.  

Berbon Hamilton was the first candidate to walk through the Osage Election Office doors this morning, said Delores Davis, election office staff. He was waiting for her to open the doors at 7:55 a.m. Hamilton will be just one of many that will put his hat in the ring for a seat on the Third Osage Nation Congress.

The candidacy-filing period begins today (March 15) and ends April 2.

General Election scheduled for June 4; Special Election scheduled for Aug. 13

Osages are being asked to visit the poll twice this year.

The General Election, scheduled for Monday, June 4, is for six seats on the Third Osage Nation Congress and seven proposed amendments to the Osage Constitution.

However, many Osages at a Feb. 28 Grayhorse Town Hall meeting didn’t know there is going to be a Special Election Aug. 13. The Special Election is for four amendments to the Osage Constitution regarding the Osage Minerals Estate.

The Second Osage Nation Congress convenes for the 2012 Hun-Kah Session starting March 19.

This is the first 24-day regular session of the year. The Congress may extend the session if needed by no more than three days.

Joe and Carol Conner describe the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve north of Pawhuska as one of the most pristine spots in the world.

During a sunny day’s drive on the Preserve’s unpaved road, the Conners take in the sunlight, grassy hilltop views and watch small buffalo herds walk across the grassland which hasn’t been developed or farmed on. “If this is not pristine, I don’t know what is,” Joe Conner (Osage) said.

More than 30 leaders converged on Pawhuska

Area residents – Osage and non-Osage – joined Principal Chief John Red Eagle and other political leaders from the Osage Nation, and across Oklahoma, to celebrate a day of “Unity” on Dec. 10 in an effort to create “a better future for all who share in this great land.”

It was 3:19 p.m. Wednesday when an e-mail began circulating the Osage Nation campus that read, “Chief Red Eagle just sent a text that he is in the White House now.”

Tuesday is when Red Eagle’s administration had sent out a bulletin that Red Eagle had been one of 12 tribal leaders chosen who would get to meet with President Barack Obama in the White House the day before the start of the annual Tribal Nations Conference today.

Osages who have IIM accounts will be included in Cobell settlement

The historic Cobell case is over as U.S. President Barack Obama signed the $3.4 billion settlement agreement Dec. 8, marking the end of the 14-year battle to obtain justice for more than 500,000 Native Americans whose Indian trust accounts were mismanaged by the Department of the Interior.

Special Session of the Second Osage Nation Congress which will start Monday Dec. 13















Principal Chief John Red Eagle has issued an executive proclamation for a Special Session of the Second Osage Nation Congress which will start Monday Dec. 13 in the Congressional Chambers.

Red Eagle issued the proclamation Dec. 7 with one item listed for consideration concerning gaming law. Up for consideration is amending the Nation's Tribal Gaming Law Update Act, according to the proclamation. It is listed as ONCA 07-09.

First Assistant District Attorney Jeff Jones (Oklahoma District 10) is making a run for the District Attorney’s office as a Democratic candidate. Oklahoma’s District 10 covers Osage and Pawnee counties.

Jones, of Skiatook, will be on the Nov. 2 ballot and is running against Republican candidate Rex Duncan of Sand Springs.

Duncan is a state Representative who is a lawyer and Oklahoma National Guard officer. He represents District 35 which covers Noble, Osage, Pawnee and Payne counties.

Sand Springs resident Eli Potts won the Democratic nomination for an Oklahoma House seat in the Aug. 24 runoff election and will be on the Nov. 2 election ballot.

Sand Springs resident Eli Potts won the Democratic nomination for an Oklahoma House seat in the Aug. 24 runoff election and will be on the Nov. 2 election ballot. He will face Republican challenger Jadine Nollan for the District 66 House seat which covers Sand Springs (where he was raised) and west Tulsa.

In unofficial results provided by the state Election Board, Potts won the Aug. 24 runoff election with 601 votes which is 55 percent of the total votes cast that day while his challenger Andrew Williams received 488 votes.
