Editorial Board members no longer serving due to new legislation targeting Osage Nation board and commission terms

October 5, 2012

To Osage News Readers:

Earlier this week we learned that new legislation from the Osage Congress effectively ends our service as members of the Osage Nation Editorial Board. We respect the law and end our terms hopeful that our work has established a stable foundation for a free and independent press in the Osage Nation. Though we were appointed by Osage Nation governmental bodies, our commitment has always been to you as Osage readers and to the principles of a free press.

Manthey served on the Nation's Editorial Council in 2008

On behalf of the Osage Nation Editorial Board, I am pleased to announce the board’s appointment of Tara McLain Manthey as a member. Manthey, an Osage tribal member, will serve a one-year term as mandated by amendments to the Osage Independent Press Act. Teresa Trumbly Lamsam completed her term as a board member this spring.

College professors Warrior and Teresa Trumbly Lamsam interviewed for the three-person board which oversees the Nation’s newspaper

The Osage Nation Congress selected one of two Osage academic scholars considered for the Editorial Board which oversees the Osage News during its Special Session on Wednesday.

By majority vote, the Congress chose Robert Warrior, director of American Indian Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as its appointment for the Editorial Board after a congressional committee conducted separate phone interviews with Warrior and Teresa Trumbly Lamsam who sat on the newspaper’s Editorial Council appointed by Principal Chief Jim Gray last year.
