Weekly Osage language course targets students unable to attend regular night classes; class offering now in its second year

The Osage Nation Language Department is recognizing participants who attend the weekly “Lunch with Language” course offered to the public this year.

The Lunch with Language course targets students, especially government employees, who may not be able to attend weeknight language courses when they are typically held during fall and spring sessions. This session’s courses were held Tuesdays during the noon lunch hour.

Beginning in October, the Osage News will be reduced to one newspaper per household.

“It is our goal to drive readers to our Osage News Web site, making it their primary source for information,” said Osage News Editor Shannon Shaw. “The news industry is changing to a more online, multi-media based information tool and we are changing with it.”

Newspaper wins General Excellence in its respective category

The Osage News and its staff won a total of seven Media Awards from the Native American Journalists Association during this year’s annual conference in South Florida.

The newspaper’s Web site www.osagenews.org won first place for Best Online Newspaper in its respective division. This is the first year the Web site has won an award in this category since it was launched in 2009.

This year, the newspaper took first place for General Excellence in the monthly/ bi-monthly category for its 2010 election coverage.

Speaking at the event will be Osage Congressman Eddy Red Eagle, Frederick F. Drummond and others.

More than a 100 invitations have gone out to local, county and state officials inviting them to the Osage Nation's Day of Reconciliation and Unity.

As promised, Chief John Red Eagle is hosting the day to restore unity between the Nation and its neighbors, according to a prepared release. Guest speakers and a meal at noon are on the agenda. The day begins at 10 a.m. at the Osage County Fairgrounds in Pawhuska.

Osage News Students of the Osage language were honored Saturday with a dinner at Wakon Iron Hall. The dinner was hosted by the organization Friends of the Osage, which raises money throughout the year so that the Osage Language Department can have functions such as the dinner.

About 50 students attended and those with the best attendance at each of the five language teaching sites were honored with a medal and a certificate. The students feasted on catered food from Burn Co., who cooks all of their food over an open flame.

The event is the annual Thanksgiving feast provided by the family of the late Lillie Cunningham, who for more than three decades has been providing for those who would have to go without on Thanksgiving.

When the doors at Wakon Iron Hall opened on Thanksgiving Day, a person’s senses are hit from all sides. First, the smell of turkey and dressing hit the nose; second, more than a hundred people are milling about the hall; and third, the sound of laughter and children playing fill the air.

Chief’s office said the checks will be released this week

It’s been a month since reimbursement checks have been mailed to Osage parents to pay for medical bills in accordance to the Nation’s Health Benefit Card program but the Chief’s Office said the checks will be mailed out soon.

Turley, 22, was injured when fighting near the Zerok Provenance of Eastern Paktika in Afghanistan.

In a crowded Pawhuska High School gymnasium Specialist Chris Turley addressed the students he sat with only three years ago. Now a veteran of the Afghan War, he was there to share his story on Veterans Day.

“I never wanted to come back here,” Turley said of having to come home after being injured in June. “My guys are still fighting.”

Council preps for Osage Oil & Gas Summit Oct. 27-29

The Osage Minerals Council is seeking an attorney.

At the OMC Oct. 8 meeting, Chairman Dudley Whitehorn told the attendees that only one attorney had come forth after asking his fellow council members to submit names for consideration. That attorney was Tulsa-based attorney William “Bill” Grimm, attorney for Jech vs. United States. The Jech case, if won, could abolish the Osage Constitution and which Whitehorn is also a plaintiff.

The Osage Mineral’s Council passed a resolution Sept. 29 to give a donation in the amount of $50,000 to support a lawsuit that could abolish the Osage Constitution.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Men wearing purple shirts were all smiles as they lined up for a photo outside of the Osage Counseling Center in downtown Pawhuska. The photo will be made into a poster for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The men had volunteered their time Sept. 9 to pose for the photo, wearing their purple shirts. Purple being the DVAM official color.

New Palace owner Rick Parker: ‘Everything will be staying the same.’

The Osage Nation LLC got rid of two Osage businesses Monday. Two businesses some Osages felt were meant to serve the community and just weren’t for profit.

The Osage Nation Gift Shop closed for good and the Palace of the Osage grocery store in Fairfax has been sold to Rick Parker, a Barnsdall grocer.

CDIB card holders-only will no longer receive the Osage News

Starting in October, the Osage News will be mailed to Osage Nation members only.

“We feel that by distributing the Osage News to membership card holders only, it will cut back on our distribution costs and save money for the Nation,” said Shannon Shaw, Editor of the Osage News.

Principal Chief John Red Eagle confirmed Tuesday that the Nation will be appealing to the United States Supreme Court before Oct. 22 in it’s lawsuit against the Oklahoma state Tax Commission.

The Osage Minerals Council has selected three members to be the OMC’s representation on the Nation’s five-member Trust Team

The Osage Minerals Council has selected three members to be the OMC’s representation on the Nation’s five-member Trust Team. The trust team is made up of three OMC members, the principal chief and the speaker of the congress.

Dudley Whitehorn, Galen Crum and Cynthia Boone were unanimously voted in by the eight-member OMC July 21, and Whitehorn was voted to be the trust team chairman. They will join Principal Chief John Red Eagle and Speaker of the Congress Jerri Jean Branstetter.

T. PAUL, Minn. – The Osage News took home five Media Awards from the Native American Journalists Association's 2010 conference here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

The newspaper won second place in the General Excellence category for bi-monthly/ monthly newspapers. This year’s NAJA conference was held July 21-24.
