‘America’s First Warriors’ author Steven Clevenger visits Osage Tribal Museum

Clevenger's book details Native American's in combat through imagery

They first fought against the U.S. government, and later with it - in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and now, in the Iraq war, among other conflicts. They are American Indian soldiers, and to photojournalist Steven Clevenger, they are America's first warriors.

Osage photojournalist documents Native soldiers in Iraq


















At an age when people think about retirement, Osage photojournalist Steven Clevenger decided to embed himself with the 2nd Battalion, 200th Infantry Division of New Mexico’s National Guard.

“I’ve covered seven wars and this is the first time I went with the United States Army,” Clevenger said in a phone interview from his home in Dallas.
