Being the Osage Tribal Princess is ‘a great opportunity’

Dora Jo Williams attends the 81st Annual American Indian Exposition of Oklahoma

When Dora Jo Williams put on her crown and sash in her hotel room in Anadarko, Okla., she began to feel a sense of pride as she will be representing 16,150 Osage tribal members for the next year.

“It makes me feel great and awesome to be able to represent my tribe as the Osage Tribal Princess,” Williams said.

Williams, 18, was the 2011-2012 Osage Tribal Princess and kept the title for another year as the 2012-2013 Osage Tribal Princess.

She will represent the Nation at the American Indian Expo in August

2011 Osage Tribal Princess Dora Williams received her crown during a reception held for the special occasion July 9.

Williams, who will be a Pawhuska High School senior this fall, was crowned by outgoing 2010 Osage Tribal Princess Vanessa Moore at the reception. More than 60 people turned out for the event at the Wah-Zha-Zhi Cultural Center.

“Thank you all for coming,” Moore told the crowd, “Being Osage Princess has been a wonderful experience for me. I know the incoming princess, Dora, will do a great job.”

Williams will represent the Osage Nation at the American Indian Exposition in Anadarko this summer

Dora Williams had a look of relief when outgoing Osage Princess Vanessa Moore handed her a bouquet of flowers, signaling to the spectators at the Osage Princess Election Dance May 21 that Williams had won the title. Shouts of joy and applause greeted Williams, who campaigned for weeks to become the new Osage Princess.

“I was just really in shock,” Williams said of winning the title. “It was really nerve wracking.”
